Corissa Bragg grew up in various Ohio towns while her parents traveled between colleges. As a toddler, she improvised short a capella songs, usually in response to tense encounters with her parents. As a young child, she gathered neighbors to watch her bedroom performances of current pop hits.
After taking up the clarinet in middle school at her parent’s suggestion – leading to a brief, bleak spell in high school marching band – she began writing love songs on her first guitar at fifteen, shortly before her first public performances. Spurning technical musicianship in favor of aching melodies and direct lyrics, she has since divided her time between playing in bands and performing solo.
Intense personal experiences with love desired, love gained, and love lost inspire her recent songs. She navigates this perilous terrain with a singular voice, vocalizing intimate passions without succumbing to overblown melodrama or bloodless vanity. Her influences range from Hope Sandoval to Billie Holiday to Cat Power to Patsy Cline and many points inbetween.
Corissa was recently selected as one of ten musicians to watch in 2010 by Scene in Cleveland, OH. This Is Everything I Own is her debut album.
